The Similarities And Differences Between Tapping Screws And Self-Drilling Screws

2025-03-17

Tapping screws are screws with drill bits. They are constructed with special electric tools, and drilling, tapping, fixing and locking are completed at one time. Tapping screws are mainly used for the connection and fixing of some thinner plates, such as the connection between color steel plates, the connection between color steel plates and purlins, wall beams, etc.

The similarities between tapping screws and self-drilling screws are that the nail bodies have threads and can self-drill, and the differences between the two are also quite obvious:

1. Difference in use: Tapping screws are used on non-metallic or softer metal materials with low hardness. It can "drill, squeeze, press, and tap" the corresponding threads on the fixed material by its own threads, so that they fit closely with each other. Tapping screws are mainly used for fixing color steel tiles of steel structures and fixing thin plates.

2. Difference in usage: When tapping screws are screwed in, the corresponding internal threads are formed by extrusion. No need to drill or tap, the operation can be completed in one go, but multiple drilling is not recommended, as it is easy to damage the drill hole or cause thread slippage. When using tapping screws, no auxiliary processing is required, and operations such as drilling, tapping, and locking can be completed directly on the material in one go, greatly saving installation time.

3. Difference in appearance: Tapping screws are generally pointed, coarse-toothed, hard, and have a certain taper, so that they can "self-drill", but cannot drill holes, while the head of the self-drilling screw thread has a drill bit that can drill holes.
